Fifth Installation of the Hurlbut Mural Project: A Celebration of Artistic Collaboration

The Dogra Art Foundation is thrilled to announce the completion of the fifth installation of the Hurlbut Mural Project. This milestone marks the first time in 111 years that the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) has collaborated with an artist from outside North America. The journey began in 2022 with the visionary direction of Jonathan Binstock and continued under the stewardship of Michael Marsh and Sarah Jesse. The mural was formally unveiled on May 19, 2024, and reached its full completion on May 31, 2024.

This project has been a labor of love for both the Dogra Art Foundation and the artist Avinash. Bringing an international artist to North America involves many challenges, from visas and insurance to labor and honoraria laws. This inaugural effort was a learning experience for all involved, requiring the coordination of numerous offices, including the curators, the Director of Exhibitions, the ISO office of the University of Rochester, the Director’s Office, the Advancement Office, facilities and maintenance, and catering. The Dogra Art Foundation extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone at the Memorial Art Gallery for their diligence, cooperation, and openness to new ideas and suggestions.

The hard work bore fruit as the mural installation commenced on May 6, 2024, with Senator Jeremy Cooney as the chief guest and Senator Samara Brouk among the distinguished attendees. The event was graced by a traditional Indian Vedic ceremony, where a ceremonial lamp was lit amidst the chanting of Vedic mantras, setting a sacred tone for the occasion. Avinash began his work with dedication, laboring twelve hours a day. Special thanks to Nalini Dogra for ensuring Avinash was well-fed and my son Pritesh and his wife Krupa, who traveled from Mumbai to Rochester to assist with the project. Avinash’s daily routine was rigorous, with early morning starts and late evening finishes, but his perseverance was rewarded.

The resulting artwork, spanning approximately 800 square feet, is a breathtaking example of anamorphic style, aptly titled “Illusionary Odyssey.” It captures the essence of life’s journey, depicting the creation of life, its ups and downs, and the surprises that ultimately lead one home to their destined path.

In conclusion, we sincerely thank the Memorial Art Gallery, our associate sponsors Sarah and Bob Hurlbut, and contributing sponsors Seema and Joe Rizzo. Your support has made this artistic dream a reality.
