On July 30, 2025, the Dogra Art Foundation, in collaboration with the University of Rochester’s Global Engagement Office, proudly hosted an engaging lecture titled “Threads of Continuity: The Past, Present, and Future of Indian Handlooms” at the historic Rush Rhees Library in Rochester, NY.
The event featured Pavithra Muddaya, founder of the Vimor Handloom Foundation, renowned for her decades-long work in empowering weavers through conservation and preserving India’s rich textile heritage. Drawing from her extensive experience, Ms. Muddaya explored the evolution of Indian handlooms from their deep cultural and historical roots, to contemporary challenges, to future opportunities for revival and sustainability.
Attendees were treated to vivid stories of traditional weaving communities, insights into conservation techniques, and inspiring examples of how heritage textiles can find relevance in the modern world. The discussion emphasized the importance of supporting artisans, fostering innovation without compromising tradition, and creating market linkages that ensure livelihoods.
Special thanks to the dedicated Dogra Art Foundation volunteers whose hard work and commitment helped make the event a success.
Events like these continue our mission to connect audiences with the living traditions of the subcontinent and to strengthen cultural ties across continents.
