Sleuthing Provenance: The Strange History of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s South Indian Temple Hall
Dr. Darielle Mason, the Stella Kramrisch Curator Emerita of Indian and Himalayan Art and head of the Department of South Asian Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will uncover a detective tale that spans half a millennium! In 1913, an adventurous American couple on their honeymoon around the world, bought over sixty huge carved granite blocks from a temple in India. Six years later, those stones arrived at a Philadelphia museum. Drawing from her book, Storied Stone, Dr. Mason will present a gripping case study that challenges how we consider authenticity, sacrality, and heritage.
